Gefilte Fish Recipe: A Classic Jewish Delicacy

Gefilte Fish is a traditional Jewish dish that has been enjoyed for generations. This dish is typically made with a combination of ground fish, vegetables, and spices. It's a delicious and healthy option for those who want to try something new.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound of ground carp
  • 1 pound of ground whitefish
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/4 cup of matzo meal
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 cup of water
  • 2 bay leaves

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground carp, whitefish, onion, carrot, celery, eggs, matzo meal, salt, sugar, and black pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly distributed.
  2. Add water to the bowl gradually, and mix until you get a smooth and soft texture. This will make it easier to shape the fish balls.
  3. Using wet hands, shape the mixture into small balls and place them into a large pot. Add water to the pot until the fish balls are covered.
  4. Add the bay leaves to the pot and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about an hour.
  5. After an hour, remove the pot from the heat and let it cool. Once it has cooled down, remove the fish balls from the pot and place them on a platter.
  6. Serve the Gefilte Fish cold, with a side of horseradish and fresh vegetables.

Tips:

  • You can use any combination of ground fish that you prefer, such as pike, salmon, or trout.
  • Make sure to wet your hands when shaping the fish balls to prevent the mixture from sticking to your hands.
  • Adding a teaspoon of sugar to the water when boiling the fish balls can help enhance the flavor.
